Leopard Mountain Lodge
Hospitality // March 2019
After successfully producing outdoor couches for the lodge in 2017 – they returned when they decided to upgrade all of their rooms so they could move from a 4 to 5 start establishment. The brief was to design furniture for each of their 9 luxury lodge rooms to suit the architecture as well as class of clientele that would be using them…
unique problems
To come up with Furniture that was both high end looking, has the right look and feel for the African bush without being too colonial AND to fit into round rondavel rooms without cluttering and being attached to walls.
All items were custom designed and produced – with the design theme being the simple yet retro DUZU design language. The free standing wardrobes were made as room dividers and cloth storage – and keep very simple. The dressers and coffee / fridge stations were made specifically to fit in all required bits and bobs to avoid clutter and to allow easy access to everything for the guests.
woods used and finishes
Wood selected was Blackwood due to the sustainability aspect – IE – utilizing invasive species especially in a very sensitive conservation area – it sent the right message and had the right story to tell.
Finish was in the water based Rystix – mainly for durability in the high wear environment.
Weaving was brought in with the bed end benches as well as the doors on the cabinets. Colour was black to blend in with the lodge décor – BUT it did add enough ethnic feel without being too over the top .
We were tasked with delivering and installing all the furniture in all the rooms between guests checking out in the morning and checking in after lunch. Added to this there were some guests remaining so their rooms had to be completely stripped and refurnished while on their morning game drive!
