Did you know that an area of tropical forest the size of Switzerland was lost last year due to deforestation? Shockingly, researchers estimate that approximately 11 football pitches were lost every MINUTE – a devastating reality that threatens biodiversity and contributes to global warming. These staggering statistics can easily overwhelm us, but at Homewood, we are passionate about doing our part to change this tide, one piece of furniture at a time.
In the face of climate change, we understand the responsibility to make a positive impact on the environment and the communities we serve. Through our unwavering commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices, we seek to preserve our planet for generations to come.
The fight against deforestation
Forests are the lungs of our planet, playing a vital role in absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Yet, deforestation continues at an alarming rate, causing irreversible damage to ecosystems and threatening countless species. At Homewood, we are deeply aware of the urgent need to address this crisis. By partnering with the Working for Water Programme (WFW) and utilising alien-invasive woods, we not only contribute to removing harmful species from South African indigenous environments, but we do not contribute to the global issue of deforestation.
Our use of alien-invasive woods, including Blackwood, River Red Gum, Sugar/Spotted Gum, Camphor, and Cottonwood helps to remove these water-thirsty species from South African ecosystems, as well as providing us with the best material for unique and stunning pieces of sustainable furniture. Each creation celebrates the intrinsic natural beauty of the timber, with its knots and variations in the grain telling the compelling story of the tree.
A life cycle of sustainability
At Homewood we strive to minimise waste by ensuring that no part of the wood is discarded. Even the off cuts find purpose in our “smalls” range, featuring serving boards and planters. We aim to reduce our environmental footprint while offering beautiful and functional items that make the perfect gift or addition to your kitchen.
