And eventually, that timber arrives at Homewood.

Discovering which timber is right for you
Choosing timber is one of the first decisions we make, because the material has a say in what the finished piece will become. Homewood works with sustainably sourced hardwoods including Cottonwood, River Red Gum, Blackwood and Sugar/Spotted Gum. Much of this timber comes from alien-invasive trees removed as part of efforts to restore South Africa’s indigenous environments and waterways.
Every piece of wood is different
Walk through a workshop and you quickly realise that wood is not uniform. Two boards from the same species can look completely different. One might be lighter. Another might have a deeper tone. One might have a straight, quiet grain, while another carries a knot or a dramatic change in direction.
Natural variations are part of what makes solid wood furniture so distinctive. Rather than treating every knot, mark or change in grain as something that needs to disappear, at Homewood, we aim to work with the character that is already there. The timber does not need to look identical to be beautiful.
From timber to table
This is where handcrafted furniture begins to reveal its difference. When furniture is produced at scale, consistency is usually the goal. Pieces need to look the same, fit the same specifications and move efficiently through the production process. Handcrafted furniture allows for another kind of relationship with the material.
