The day begins with wood, not machines
Morning in the workshop doesn’t start with buttons, but rather selection.
The team gathers around our hand drawn project board, stretching far down the workshop. A plank is lifted and then studied carefully. Not just for size or yield, but for character.
At Homewood, the word “handcrafted” holds value.
We don’t use CNC machines to create stacks of identical cuts.
Every joint is measured and shaped with a real person monitoring the process and making judgement calls. While a machine does what it’s told, a craftsperson has the agency to adjust.
This is where the term “handcrafted furniture” stops being a label used to sound fancy and becomes a process. Custom wood furniture at Homewood doesn’t just follow a template. You’re investing in quality one-of-a-kind furniture pieces, where no two pieces of solid wood furniture are ever truly the same.
The hands behind the work
If you stay at the workshop long enough, you start to notice a rhythm; from the subtle hums of a drill to the synchronised taps of a chisel.
Across the room, a craftsman leans into a joint, shaving it down by millimetres you can’t see but will definitely feel later. On the other side, a woman lifts her arm every second or so with a thread in hand, carefully creating a new woven pattern.
These aren’t anonymous faces. These are skilled artisans apart of our Homewood team, many of whom have spent years refining their craft with us.
Homewood isn’t just producing furniture, but supporting local livelihoods, training artisans, and keeping a very human skill alive in a world that increasingly prefers shortcuts.
You may not see that in the final piece. You do, however, feel it.
Five woods. Five personalities.
Walk past the cutting area and you’ll find what feels like a quiet gathering of characters. Each wood brings its own temperament to the table.
Blackwood is deep timbre. It’s the kind of elegant wood that belongs in spaces that don’t need to shout.
European Oak, recently re-added to our collection, is a classic for a reason. It holds structure and tells a story with time.
Plantation Teak leans toward resilience. It’s built for living, for busy spaces, and the kind of environments where furniture isn’t just admired but used.
Sugar Gum and Spotted Gum sit somewhere between bold and grounded. It’s a strong and durable choice, with a rugged aesthetic that draws in the eye.
Let’s not forget about a local favourite, Cottonwood. It’s lighter, softer and brings a different kind of calm into a space.
When you choose between the woods, you need to think about your intentions. Where will it sit? What purpose is it serving? That’s the difference between buying furniture and commissioning something that belongs. View each Homewood wood type by range so you can see the different for yourself.
Where Africa shows up in the details
Some things can be copied easily, but Homewood’s selection of weaves can’t.
They’re tactile, unique and you can almost feel the pull of each strand.
Across collections like Duzu, Paindane, and Khumbula, there’s a thread running quietly beneath the surface of all woven furniture options. All routed in African culture and created by local artisans.
It’s the kind of detail that doesn’t need explanation… but rewards attention.
How a piece comes to life
Every piece starts with a conversation. Sometimes it’s clear from the outset, and others take time to shape. Either way, it becomes a brief that moves into design.
From there, a quote. Our team at Homewood works to ensure each one is transparent based on expected materials, time, and craftsmanship involved.
Then the build begins and everything is measured meticulously, made, checked according to your specifications.
Finally, that leads us to delivery. At Homewood, our team works hard to ensure it’s not just another “product” leaving the shop, but something that’s been considered from start to finish.
That’s how custom-made furniture works when it’s done properly.
So… what does “handcrafted” really mean?
In a world of items that are just “good enough,” there is still something special in real curated items that are “done properly”.
That’s the difference between a product that fills a gap and a piece that defines a home. It’s about skill, time, and the patience to get the proportions right before the first cut is made.
